Want to replace Windows with the most secure operating system you can run today? In this step by step tutorial, David Bombal shows you how to download and install Qubes OS and completely replace Windows on your laptop. Qubes OS is a free, Linux-based operating system built around strong security through VM isolation, and it is trusted by security-focused users and organizations. The video references praise
for Qubes from Edward Snowden, Mullvad, and the EFF before walking through the full install.
You will start by checking the Qubes OS documentation and installation guide, including the hardware requirements: a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor with Intel VT-x or AMD-V for nested virtualization, at least 6 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended) and 32 GB of storage (128 GB recommended), plus a look at the hardware compatibility list and certified hardware. Next, you will download Rufus from rufus.ie and the latest Qubes OS ISO from qubes-os.org (roughly 8 GB), then use Rufus to write the image to a USB drive in DD image mode. From there, David reboots into the BIOS, disables Secure Boot, sets the USB drive as the first boot option, and boots the Qubes installer. You will follow
the installation: choosing language and keyboard, selecting the installation destination, creating a user account, and completing setup.
On first boot you will pick your templates (Debian by default, or Fedora), connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and optionally set window scaling to 2x for high-DPI screens. By the end, you will have Windows fully replaced with Qubes OS and a far more secure, private setup than a traditional Windows, macOS, or basic Linux install. Version shown: Qubes OS 4.3.1.
Note: this is an educational lab install. Installing Qubes OS erases your drive, so back up your data first and review the official documentation before you begin.
